Blended & Grains

The term 'Blended Malt' has proven a controversial choice by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) since its introduction in 2008 in the wake of the Cardhu scandal - when Diageo tried to bottle a blended malt under the name of one of their single malt distilleries, Cardhu, to keep up with demand.  The term refers to blends of malt whiskies from more than one distillery, bottled without the addition of grain whisky.

Previously, these 'non-single' malt whiskies were known as either 'pure' or 'vatted' malts, but the SWA rejected both these classifications in new legislation, arguing that the historical term 'pure' was vague, non-descriptive and open to abuse, while 'vatted' was perceived as unglamorous, confusing and difficult to translate for new customers to whisky in foreign markets.
